OVERALL:
The Chorus opens the curtain to the Montagues and Capulets brawling on the streets, only to have the Prince declare death upon anyone who does so again. Meanwhile, Romeo falls in love with Juliet, who was being courted by Paris; they happily decide upon marriage at Juliet’s balcony. However, Tybalt and Mercutio’s quarrel on the streets lead to Tybalt killing Mercutio, and Romeo killing Tybalt in revenge. With Romeo banished from Verona, and Paris’ courtship accepted by Capulet, Juliet takes advice from Friar Lawrence and takes a vial. Romeo, misinformed that Juliet has died, visits the Capulets’ tomb to poison himself before Juliet. The Capulets and Montagues arrive only after Paris, Romeo, and Juliet have all been killed, and the curtains close to the families mending their relationship over their children’s bodies.
CHORUS
Act I Scene I - The quarrel between Sampson and Abram lead to the sparring between Benvolio and Tybalt. The Prince, upon witnessing the scene, declares death upon any further public brawl between the Montagues and the Capulets.
Act I Scene II - Lady Capulet informs Juliet about Paris' courtship.
Act II Scene I - At Capulet's ball, Romeo falls in love with Juliet. Tybalt attempts to strike him, but is deterred temporarily by Capulet.
Act II Scene II - Romeo meets Juliet at the balcony, where they check their love for each other and decide on marriage.
Act III - Romeo pleads Friar Lawrence to manage his marriage with Juliet, and Friar Lawrence accepts the request in hopes to end the two families' feud.
Act IV Scene I - Mercutio spars with Tybalt, and is killed, which leads to Romeo killing Tybalt in retaliation. Benvolio informs the situation to the Prince, who banishes Romeo from Verona.
Act IV Scene II - The Nurse tells Juliet about Tybalt's death and Romeo's banishment.
Act V - Capulet accepts Paris' courtship, and schedules Juliet and Paris' wedding.
Act VI Scene I - Friar Lawrence gives a vial to Juliet, in solution to her problems. Juliet takes the vial.
Act VI Scene II - On Juliet's wedding day, the Capulets, Nurse, and Paris grieve her 'death'.
Act VII - Romeo is misinformed of Juliet's 'death' and heads to her tomb to kill himself.
Act VIII - Romeo encounters Paris, who was also visiting Juliet, and kills him in a fight. He kills himself. Friar Lawrence tries to save Juliet, but she rejects him and stabs herself beside Romeo. The Prince, Capulets, and Montague arrive too late, and the two families finally become brothers

While abridging the script, I focused on preserving the plot, including comedic elements, and maintaining clear characterization for each character. In choosing monologues or lines, I looked for those that symbolically delivered the themes of love and violence/conflict, and those that were generally popular and widely loved (those that the play would feel empty without).
The tone of this play was set to be light and humorous, yet exaggerated enough to give insight to each character. This play is unique in all of its characters have clear, strong motivation to their actions due to their positions (within the feud, as their career, by loyalty, etc.), and I wanted to maximize that trait.
I wanted to convey the idea that, behind social position and circumstance, there is always a human being that makes mistakes, fears one’s fate, and pursues one’s greatest value, whether it be life or love. Watching various characters die for their love or honor, and watching even the most powerful families of Verona fall into tragedy, I hope the audience would be able to feel the catharsis and the inspiration to make their own life theirs.
